Freedom Is a Product of Sacrifice

Posted on July 6, 2022

This week we are going to hear from one of our favorite alumni and who is now our current BC marketing director Melodie Avila! As we continue to celebrate the freedoms so many died to provide and protect for us in this country, she will be sharing with us how the greatest Hero of all time sacrificed and gave us a freedom far greater than earthly freedom that we can guard and walk in daily. But there are keys to walking this out! Ready to hear them? Grab your coffee or favorite drink, sit, read and receive from this powerful devotional!

When we look up the definition of freedom, the dictionary tells us that freedom is “the quality or state of being free: such as; the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action” (Webster). It tells us that freedom is liberation. Liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another. Freedom is INDEPENDENCE.

Merriam-Webster also defines freedom as being unrestricted:

According to the Cross, and according to the Gospel of Jesus, the dictionary is 100% correct. But the freedom that we know and love in Christ is the fruit and product of sacrifice. The sacrifice that gives us freedom is the price Jesus paid on the cross for all of humanity. Because of that sacrifice, we all have the freedom to delight in the liberties of living a life that reflects everything defined above.

How do we attain this freedom? And then how do we walk it out?

Walking in freedom is two-fold:

1. Freedom is a sacrifice that is continually RECEIVED.

We all understand that Christ gave the sacrifice of His life and His sacrifice purchased freedom. But the freedom He purchased was not just for those who encountered Him in a moment in time back then, who experienced the miracles, signs, and wonders during His life in flesh on earth. But the benefits of His sacrifice are to be received by all: those who believed yesterday, who believe today, and who will believe tomorrow. Not only that, but we can receive this freedom every single day!

Galatians 3:22 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened

John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

2. Freedom is walked out through CONTINUAL SACRIFICE.

As you celebrate freedom, don’t forget to thank God for the sacrifice of Jesus that purchased the ultimate freedom for us. Then put your gratitude into action by living a life of yieldedness and sacrifice in obedience to what God has asked you to do. Our obedience that leads to sacrifice will always produce greater freedom!
