Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James 1:2-4
Lately I’ve noticed some talk around here about the stretching that is happening in students since starting this school year. It’s never in a negative way, just an awareness that change is happening. Between adjusting to a new city, home, church, friend group, and school, I know- the stretch is real. But thank God for it.
When I found out I was pregnant with my first baby, my very first pregnancy sign was terrible aching/stretching pains. I thought I was either dying or growing a MONSTER. It always happened in the middle of the night and it went on for about two weeks. My doctor said it was totally normal and that my body was just preparing for new life - how exciting (but ouch)! Even though those weeks were painful, the pain was proof that something was growing and something new was coming. I was happy to endure.
Stretch = Growth
When we stretch, our capacity is being enlarged. It means God trusts us with more.
Anytime we step out and try something new, whether it’s going off to college to learn about Jesus, or taking a new job, or trying out a small group at church, you’re going to experience a certain level of discomfort.
It’s not fun, but stretching means we’re growing. It’s true for spiritual muscle and for our body’s muscles too! Fascia is a tough connective tissue that encloses every muscle in our body, and it can actually hold back our muscle growth. Because this tissue is so tough, it has to be stretched in order for our muscles to have room to grow. Regardless of training and dieting, it’s the stretching that allows growth to happen.
When we face stretching seasons, remember the six letter word “endure”.
When you feel overwhelmed, endure.
When you wonder what God is doing, endure.
When you’re tempted to run, endure.
We’re able to endure the stretch by partnering with God’s amazing grace. Receive His grace for today’s stretch, endure, and get excited about what’s ahead!
