One of our goals as a college is to be able to put our students in any environment in any place in the world where they can be successful. What are the qualities needed to be successful anywhere? We could make lists of endless character traits or skills that it would take, but when Jesus left His followers to carry on His mission, He told them to focus on only one thing: making disciples.
Think about that. If you can make a disciple, you can be successful anywhere. That should free our minds! We don’t have to have the best technology, an unlimited budget, the greatest speaking ability, or the most followers on Instagram to change the world. If we can just learn how to make a disciple, we can be successful.
Bethany College is determined for its students not only to be followers of Christ, but also to teach others to become fully devoted followers of Christ. We believe it is a myth that only a select few Christian “Navy SEALs” are the ones who can be disciple-makers. We believe that if someone is sincerely trying to follow Christ, he or she can help others do so too. We challenge our students to believe that making a disciple is as simple as always reaching back to those who are coming up behind them.
Paul puts it this way in 1 Thessalonians 2:7 (ESV): “But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.”
When a child is looking to be nurtured, it reaches up for its mom or dad, and the mom or dad must bow low to pick up that child. We teach our students to bow low for the next generation. Seniors in the college bow low to new freshmen to help them grow and mature in the Lord. Our students are weekly bowing low to help those in high school and middle school through school clubs, and many of them serve in B-Kids on the weekends. We are teaching them that even though they are young themselves, this is not all about them. Young people need to already be thinking about the next generation coming up behind them. We are to bow low to keep moving the gospel forward.
