If you're in high school and approaching graduation, you probably already know what question we're talking about.
It's that one question that you get from everyone that you know- from grandma to your next door neighbor. It will probably come up at the dinner table during Thanksgiving (brace yourself) and it will relentlessly pursue you throughout your senior year. You've probably heard it a hundred times already.
It's a packed and loaded question that can feel intimidating to answer. Why? Because it calls into question our very existence and purpose for living... and most of the time we're just not quite ready to nail that down.
Pastor Jon Torres says it "burns his soul."
The question is: "So what are you going to do next?"
Being > Doing
Our society puts pressure on us to answer this question even at a young age.
When we're making decisions for college and career, we rarely know exactly what we want to do. There's a better question you should be asking. This is your new response to the endless "so what are you doing next?" questions.
The new question is, "Who are you becoming?"
Instead of thinking about what you will do in 5 years, think about who you want to be in 5 years.
When you work on becoming, you grow into the calling that God has placed on your life. And if you just skip to the doing, you won't have the character to sustain that calling.
Change What to Who
We have a simple challenge to get you thinking about the who rather than the what. Write down 5 things you want to be 5 years from now. Use this Instagram story template to share your who with your friends!
Stop by at the College Hangout at Bethany Conference
We would love to meet you and learn more about who you want to become. Make sure to stop by and hangout with us before service at Bethany Conference on June 21st at 5:30. You can register for the college hangout here and we will be in touch!
